Blood-crossing : cats are coupled between direct or very close relatives(parents/child or brothers/sisters). These crossings have to be the object of a lot of attention and require good knowledge in genetics. Bowlegged : says about the knees of a cat which tend to curve towards the middle, like cattle. Break : indentation of the nose with right angle at the level of the edge and between eyes. Cell : functional basic unity of the body. Chromosome : tiny structure in the form of stick situated in the nucleus of cells and which controls the hereditary characters. It is there that are the genes, arranged in order shelf space. Every human being possesses a fixed number of chromosomes, characteristics of the sort. Cobby (type) : term which often defines a short, crouched morphology, with wide shoulders and breeches. Korat is of said average size semi-cobby, neither compact nor slim with a slightly curved back. He is powerful, muscular and supple. Colour : darker tint of the extremities (mask, ears, feet and tail). Condition : defines the physical health and mental of the cat. Are to be considered : the weight, the general state and the toilet. Edge bone : lively edge of the nose. Hollow : place situated between the rib cage and the thighs; we determine it by looking at the side in sagittal section. Breeches : backside. Drawing : a cat in nine lines. 1. With some grey ink and a wet paintbrush, draw three side lines by beginning with that of the left-handler and by curving slightly the first one and the last one inward. 2. Direct the point of the paintbrush upward the sheet to paint ears. Turn the base of the brush on one side by trying to move the least possible the point.
3. The point always steered upward, started with the neck and low the paintbrush by keeping the point in the center of the line. Arrived at the backside, turn the point to the outside of the line and round off this one encircles it. 4. Add the second half of the body by inverting the direction of the circle. Note that this line begins a little more low so that the body is not regular.
5. Paint the tail with fortifying swept line of the base of the back.
6. Add strips with dark ink, the mustaches, the point for the nose.
Dress (composition of it) : a normal dress consists of three types of hairs : hairs, silks or hairs of beard, the sub-hair or down. Diploïde : cell having two complete games of chromosomes. Dome : says about a convex forehead or jutting out forehead. Dominance : situation in which one of the chromosomes of a pair of allèle expresses itself completely ( total dominance) or partially ( partial dominance), whereas the other one is genetically silent. The term also applies to the line produced by a dominant gene. Double fur : under thick hair covered with a coat of longer and more thick hairs. The hairs of beard are the same length that other hairs. A good example of double fur is supplied by the Blue of Russia while Korat has no double fur. Down : secondary, sweet and curly hair system. Down ears : bundles of hairs growing horizontally at the level of ears. Enzyme : big molecule, of totally or partially protein nature, which settles or provokes a transformation (of metabolic type). Extrusion : projection of the bottom of a set (see protusion). Fancy Cat : feline fan. This term applies to all those who are attracted by domestic cats, the breeding or the competitions. In almost all the countries it exists an official organization that can be joined. These organizations assume the following responsibilities : register cats and their descent, complete a data bank on the pedigrees, supply judges, licenses for the competitions and the exhibitions, charter clubs, etc.... In certain countries, these tasks are carried out by private clubs. Flame : mark situated between the middle of the forehead and the nose to certain cats. Not to Korat. Forehead-nasal break : junction point of the muzzle and the skull. Gaiter : tint white on the extremity of the posterior paws (not to Korat). Gamete or germ cell : sex cell intended to merge with gamete of the other sex during the sexual reproduction. The ovule is female gamete, the sperm cell is male gamete. Gene : determiner of a hereditary character. Particular segment of DNA, situated on the chromosome. Unity of the heredity, controlling the growth, the development and the functioning of the body. Genetic pool : genetic equipment of a given individual, with regard to the considered characters. Ghost (marks) : light tabby mark observed to certain monochrome cats, especially when they are young. These marks penalize kittens and are not authorized at the young Korat cat. Gloves : term indicating the color of a spotless white of the previous paws of certain cats (not Korats). Hat of ass : straight and closer ears. Heterozygote : for a given genetic character, says about an individual or a cell possessing two different genes received from each of the parents. The pair of allèle so consists of a dominant gene and a recessive gene. Homozygote : for a given genetic character, says about an individual or a cell possessing two identical genes within a pair of allèle. Indiscretions (eyes) : peculiarity of certain breeds of cats having a blue eye and the other copper (or orange). This never arrives to Korat. Inhibitor (gene) : we think that this gene is responsible for the inhibition of the colour; it would thus be responsible for the tipping and the silvered variety to certain breeds of cats (never to Korat). Iris : surrounding colored disc pupil. The iris distinguishes itself in a before part and a back part. Pigment can or not settle in the iris, so determining its color. Korat : definition to come (obviously the most difficult to be found if we want a consensus in any debate!-).. Lethal (gene) : gene the effect of which phénotypique is so radical as it entails the death of the bearer. Different lethal genes can provoke the death with various stages of the development, since the fertilization up to an advanced age. These genes can be dominant, partially dominant or recessive. Genetic connection : grouping of different genes on the same chromosome, rather close physically to be passed on as a single entity. Locus : position or place occupied on a chromosome by a gene or one of its allèles (plural : loci). Maloclusion or dysgnathisme : bad adaptation of the superior and lower set of teeth, leading to a defect of lock of jaws. Maltesing : aggregation of pigment within the hairy follicle (see dilution). Masking or épistage : action to mask the phénotypique effect of a member (or both members) of a pair of allèles by a gene of a different pair. The masked gene is said hypostatics. Mask : facial region of darker tint, including the place of mustaches and being able to go up to ears to certain cats (not Korat). Melanin : main pigment insuring the tint of the hair and the skin. We distinguish the eumélanine, or true melanin, and the phéomélanine. Modifiers : polygènes altering the effect of a major gene. Multiple Allèle : series of three allèles or more, each of them being able to be in a particular locus of a chromosome; the tabby system or the albino system are examples. Necklace : coloring tabby around the neck (not to Korat). Nucléotidiques bases : a gene consists of the chain of four nucléotidiques bases : the adénine ( A ), the guanine ( G ), the thymine ( T ) and the cytosine ( C ). The matching is strict : in with T; G with C. The various possible combinations establish genetic messages which are expressed in the form of ARN's molecule called messenger, which is deciphered in the cell during the synthesis of proteins. Nucleus : space of command of the cell; contains chromosomes (DNA). Oriental (glance) : slope of eyes with regard to a parallel imaginary horizontal line at the top of the forehead. The external edge of eyes points towards the middle of the base of ears. Oriental (type) : long and triangular head, rangy and thin body, lengthened and fine paws, long tail in the form of whip. Partial or total dominance : heterozygous state where the phénotype is intermediate between that of both homozygotes. Pedigree : the family tree of a given animal; the document giving evidence of its previous history. Phénotype : physical appearance of an individual dependent on its genetic equipment (genotype). Polygène : together of two pairs of allèles (or more), with a presumed cumulative effect, governing quantitative characters such as the size, the pigmentation, the intelligence. If their functioning is simultaneous, a small group of genes can produce specific physical characters. Protusion : overtaking of a top with regard to a bottom, for example a jaw on the other (promandible). Strips : tabby mark (not to pure breed Korat). Recessive : indicate a gene which, within a pair of allèles, does not express itself (because of the presence of the dominant allèle). This term also applies, by extension, to the character controlled by the gene. Normally, the recessive genes can express themselves only in the homozygous state. Curved (ears) : ears bent forwards. This phénotype results from the effect of a dominant gene which alters the structure of the cartilage. This does not have to be at true Korat. Queen : cat having had at least a litter. Spotted : hairs of the "bad" color scattered in the fur. Speckled : see spotted. Standard : set of rules defining the ideal morphology and\or the color of a breed. The various standards are elaborated by a committee and are the object of a control on behalf of the division ad hoc. A standard defining an ideal, it is not very probable to see a cat filling all the criteria. The role of a judge is to estimate (mentally) the correspondence of every cat to these rules : typify, color. The standards sometimes vary from a country to the other one. Sterilization : operation consisting in castrating a male or in practicing the ablation of ovaries to the female. Stop : change of direction, light slope, cavity occurring at the level of the forehead-nasal break, under the line connecting both eyes. Stop can be imperceptible or on the contrary very pronounced. Sub-hair : the real sub-hair is the woolly down which is under hairs. Tabby (motive) : tabby strictly speaking and of the motive added agouti (spotted ) consists of the drawing. Motives which we find (especially not for Korat!-) : spotted tabby, tigered, speckled or classic. The strong cats of not domestic genes can present bows. Tara Verte :
Thermolabile : destroyed by the heat. It is the case of certain substances, as the enzymes, that lose their particular properties once warmed in 55°C or more. The third joint : equivalent of the junction point between phalanxes and metacarpi at the man. Wash :
Wide space : says about the distance between ears for some breeds, superior to the length of an ear (not to Korat). Withers : the highest of the back, situated between shoulder blades. |
