With the approach of the birth, the she-cat becomes sometimes more anxious, nervous and meows on an unusual tone. It is at this time there that she will choose a calm and hot place to have her kittens. In general, the she-cat will lose the mucous stopper of a few hours to 48 hours before the expulsion of the kittens and her vulva will dilate. The first contractions are recognized very quickly : waves appear on her belly. At this time, the she-cat will lick her genitals and will meow. Her breath will become faster, the cervix will dilate and the contractions will increase. The first kitten will not be long to be born. The total duration of expulsion is in general lower than 12 hours. The exit of the first kitten is the longest and the most painful. It is also necessary to count a 15 minutes deadline to 2 hours between the births. When the kitten appears the she-cat tears the placental membrane with her tongue, thus stimulating the breathing of the baby. The mom will cut then the umbilical cord with her teeth, will dry the kitten and will eat the placenta which contains substances supporting lactation. Lastly, she will lick the anal area of the kitten to stimulate his functions of elimination. It can happen that expulsions are so close that the mom forsakes the last born. In this case, you must intervene yourself very quickly and take care to tear the placental membrane with a perfectly clean linen by paying great attention to the skin of the kitten which is then fine and fragile. Then it is necessary to delicately wipe the kitten while always starting with the nose and the mouth. Cut then the umbilical cord to approximately 5 centimetres by compressing it with a linen soaked with alcohol in order to stop the blood flow. Finish by rubbing the kitten, while starting with the bottom of the belly while going up towards the head to stimulate his breathing. Once all these tasks achieved, it should delicately be deposited close to the nipple of his/her mother. The kittens are born with their eyes closed. |
