Korat is a breed who can manage its food. It is very rare. Water and enough dry cat food and he can remain alone two weeks in an apartment. Afterwards, it is simply necessary to come to change the litter. On the other hand, be careful with water : a bowl or a basin evaporates also quickly in summer… For longer absences: the technique of the reversed water bottle (Torricelli’s experiment) and the sand vat (vaster than a litter and thus being able to last more than 15 days) seems more reasonable… The jaws of the cats are made to shear and not to chew, he does not have digestive enzymes, therefore his stomach is strongly requested, his intestines are short. They have a very developed sense of smell but on the other hand the taste buds are very few. They cannot thus taste food. The research undertaken for 30 years has made it possible to pass from the simple stage of the simple food to that of the nutrition adapted to the health of the cat. To feed a cat is not like to feed a human ! One does not even feed his cat like oneself, simply because the man is omnivorous and the cat is carnivorous. The nutritional need is different and each organism is adapted to its type of food. The needs for the cat break up into proteins (meats...) for 40% (10% for a human), lipids (greases...) for 35% (30% for a human) and carbohydrates (cereals…) for 25% (60% for a human). To feed a cat as human is dangerous for its organism : too rich in carbohydrates and badly proportioned in lipids. Is the cat a gourmet ? No : a cat has 500 taste buds (human 9000), he is a bad taster. Yes : a cat has 60 to 65 million cells for the sense of smell (5 to 20 million for human). Teeth of a cat… The cats have 30 teeth including 12 incisors, 4 canines, 10 pre carnivorous and 4 carnivorous. As he is a carnivorous predator all his teeth are sharp even the carnivorous ones (molars). Cat and human digestion… The cat does not have digestive enzymes in his saliva: no pre digestion thus the food arrives directly in the stomach. The volume of a cat’s stomach is 0,3 litre it thus contains 58 to 60% of its digestive tract - whereas the volume of that of a man is 1,3 litre is 10% of our digestive tract. The weight of the digestive tract corresponds from 2,8 to 3,5% of the weight of the cat whereas it constitutes 11% of that of human. The number of bacteria constituting the intestinal flora is of a million per gram in the cat and of 10 times more at the human one. The cat being carnivorous, he digests less varieties of food than the omnivorous man. The length of the large intestine is 0,3 to 0,4 meter for the cats (1,5 meter for the human ones). In the cat the small intestine is short : he does not make it possible to digest carbohydrates well. The cat digests quickly and the food not adapted to the carnivorous mode is rejected in strong proportion. His stomach is constantly active. The cat likes to have many small meals (15 to 20 per day). The acidity of the stomach of the cats is much stronger than that of the stomach of human what allows the digestion of the bones and the fight against the bad introduced bacteria. Misleading names It is necessary to be wary of misleading names like "to the lamb", "chicken", etc. This type of inscription is used when the food contains between 4% minimum and 14% maximum of the quoted ingredient. Attention also when the meat is built-in "fresh" and not dry because the water contained in the meat is then counted like meat ! Thus 20% of fresh meat (containing 70% of water) will bring only 6% of nutrients. Korat’s Food A food containing the best quality of dry cat food, and a few pieces of meats (some times per month to refine the teeth) and water is advised for the Korats.
